The nebula has a diameter of about 100 light years and a considerable extension of 20×25 arc minutes in the night sky, (moon about 30 arc minutes). The distance to Earth is 7,000 light-years.

NGC 7380, also referred to as Sh2-142 in the Sharpless catalog, is an active star-forming region. It consists of considerable amounts of gas and dust. In the center is the so-called DH Cephei binary system, consisting of 2 massive O-type suns with a temperature of 30,000 degrees. Class 0 stars are the largest and hottest types of suns known to us, their luminosity can exceed that of our sun by a factor of 1 million. The two suns unleash the delicate glow of the magic nebula by ionization.
